clear rules #Yixin学习个性

Clear rules + supportive coaching?

For Yixin’s personality, we need to create (and repeat) clear rules, clear targets and clear consequences, because he hasn’t developed those controls from within. We may need to micro-manage.

  1. Agree on the rules and consequences (like no-TV) with parents and Yixin
  2. paste on wall
  3. The rule will be tested. At that juncture, parents need to be careful not to send the signal that “Rules can be compromised.”

Experience – see https://tanbintpy.wordpress.com/2016/08/09/consequences-of-not-doing-your-own-studies/

Alex Chung (piano teacher) and Mr Cheng (Chinese teacher) both set clear rules. In fact, all primary schools set clear rules. As a student I didn’t need those, but my son is different.

gentle but firm warning #Yixin学习个性

Beware – Not sure of the side effect. May need some fine tuning…

The piano tutor Alex Chung demonstrated a style of verbal warning, which might be effective for kids like Yixin…

Gentle but firm warning. Clearly stated rules and targets.

Avoid creating a penalty after the offense.

measurable yardsticks(@effort^result) for target/reward

I feel a better type of target/reward is the inelastic yardstick, not subject to the parents’s whims. (Sometimes a yardstick on measurable effort is better than yardsticks on measurable output.)

eg: computerized tests — sometimes kid could even retest and monitor his own progress
eg: timer for copy-write
eg: School exams
eg: renzi – how many chars
eg: how many blogs
